This area is not only a popular destination with foreign tourists, but also with residents from other parts of Spain, many of whom have second homes here. Things to Do and Places to Visit in San Pedro del PinatarProbably the main reason visitors choose to visit San Pedro del Pinatar is due to the town's privileged location on the edge of the Mar Menor lagoon. The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lake in Europe and covers an area of 170 km. The lake has many kilometres of sandy beaches, and the water is always warm enough to bathe in, even during the winter months. The waters of Mar Menor are believed to have many health properties due to the high salt content. Bathers come from many miles to coat themselves in the mud from the lake which is believed to have a positive effect on a number of ailments such as arthritis, skin complaints and broken bones. There are many fine examples of Spanish Modernist architecture in the town. These include the Villa de San Sebastian or the Casa del Reloj, which is now a restaurant serving a wide array of local dishes. The San Pedro Apostle Church dates from the early 17th century and was once a Franciscan hermitage, while one of the most visited architectural symbols in the town is the Quintin Mill, a windmill that marks the entrance to the mud baths of San Pedro de Pinatar. There is a fresh fish market held daily in the Esplanada de Lo Pagan, where visitors can watch the auction of fish and seafood to local restaurateurs. On a visit to the town it is also worth taking time to explore the nearby natural park of Salinas y Arenales.
