San Pedro del Pinatar
San Pedro del Pinatar is a small municipal town of Murcia, south east Spain. Situated on the Costa Calida, the town covers an area of around 22 square kilometres and has a population of roughly 24,000. Fishing and fish processing are the main industries of the town, along with tourism. Since Roman times, the local salt ponds have been mined and transportation of salt is another major industry of the region. This area is not only a popular destination with foreign tourists, but also with residents from other parts of Spain, many of whom have second homes here.
Things to Do and Places to Visit in San Pedro del Pinatar
Probably the main reason visitors choose to visit San Pedro del Pinatar is due to the town's privileged location on the edge of the Mar Menor lagoon. The Mar Menor is the largest salt water lake in Europe and covers an area of 170 km. The lake has many kilometres of sandy beaches, and the water is always warm enough to bathe in, even during the winter months.
The waters of Mar Menor are believed to have many health properties due to the high salt content. Bathers come from many miles to coat themselves in the mud from the lake which is believed to have a positive effect on a number of ailments such as arthritis, skin complaints and broken bones.
Those who like to explore local folklore, historical buildings and antiquities will not be disappointed with San Pedro del Pinatar. There is the Museum of the Sea, which has a collection of marine artefacts and depicts a history of local marine life. There is also the Ethnographic Archaeological Museum with a collection of fossils and other paleontological curiosities, and a separate section dedicated to submarine archaeology.
Las Salinas Conservation and Research Centre is a collection of nature exhibits and an interesting display of salt mine work.
There are many fine examples of Spanish Modernist architecture in the town. These include the Villa de San Sebastian or the Casa del Reloj, which is now a restaurant serving a wide array of local dishes. The San Pedro Apostle Church dates from the early 17th century and was once a Franciscan hermitage, while one of the most visited architectural symbols in the town is the Quintin Mill, a windmill that marks the entrance to the mud baths of San Pedro de Pinatar.
There is a fresh fish market held daily in the Esplanada de Lo Pagan, where visitors can watch the auction of fish and seafood to local restaurateurs. On a visit to the town it is also worth taking time to explore the nearby natural park of Salinas y Arenales. Here you will find more mud baths to take advantage of if you are suffering with muscle pain or ailments of the joints or skin.
As well as being a beautiful village with an attractive coastline; San Pedro del Pinatar has a great many cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels, and night clubs. Many locals and visiting tourists from nearby arrive in San Pedro del Pinatar as evening falls to enjoy the lively nightlife.
The main fiestas that are celebrated in the town are San Pedro Apostle at the end of June and Romeria de la Virgen del Carmen on July 16, and Easter week is celebrated with parades and street parties.
