Location: Apartamento Piteres is in the heart of historic ALTEA just 45 minutes from Alicante airport. Altea is rightfully known as 'A Jewel in the Valencia Region.' The picturesque town looks to the sea across one of the most delightful bays on the Mediterranean. Steeped in history, over the centuries Altea has welcomed (or been conquered by) Iberians, Romans, Moors and Christians, all of whom have contributed to the special culture of these coastal lands. International tourism has affected most of Southern Spain, and the town has expanded along the coast, but unlike some resorts Altea has managed to maintain its historical charm, whilst providing an abundance of shops, restaurants and attractions to suit most people. Exploring Altea: Stepping out of Apartamento Piteres and turning right will take you to the Church Square, the focal point of the casco antiguo (old town). Seen from miles around, the landmark blue and white dome of the Virgen del Consuelo church presides over the whole town. From the viewpoint off of the square, you can see the curve of the bay to the neighbouring town of Albir, and the coastline beyond. From here you can meander down to the seafront by any of the network of cobblestone streets. The streets, the steepness of which are sometimes offset by steps, are adorned with bougainvillea and jasmine. Solid wooden doors and iron grilles stand out on the whitewashed house fronts, with little balconies looking out to sea. Culture: Because of its privileged location and brightness, 'a village roasted by the sun,' according to Gabriel Miro; Altea has always attracted many bohemians. Artists, painters, sculptors and writers of many nationalities have been drawn to the town, making their home here and benefiting from the inspiration they receive from its unique setting. They in turn, have contributed to its rich cultural life, and the official title, 'Cultural Capital of the Valencia Region,' has been bestowed on Altea. The University of Culture and Fine Arts is adjacent to the old town, and now attracts a whole new generation of artists. The University has a Theatre of Performing Arts, where distinguished ensembles appear regularly. Details of forthcoming events are available from the University. In support of its mantle as Cultural Capital, Altea is also a town with a special taste for antiques and hand-crafted goods. Guest Book: Can't speak highly enough of this apartment. We have just returned from a short break at Apartamento Piteres and were delighted with the accommodation. Before departure we received detailed information and friendly communication from the owner about everything that we needed to know. On arrival the apartment was spotlessly clean and there was an (unexpected) pack of groceries to get us going. Everything was exactly as described or better, and the apartment was both well-equipped and well-maintained. It's location two minutes from the Church Square was perfect for us, and the views from the living area and balcony were great. There was a CD player, with selection of classical music, and a DVD player with an assortment of films for those who feel the need. This is a great base for an out of season break exploring the area, or equally in the summer it's proximity to some great beaches would make it family-friendly. Sue & Ray, Hampshire, UK. Date of Stay: January 2008 |
